Creating New Habits

Happy New Year!! Can you believe that it’s almost February?? How are you doing on the goals you set for 2024? Many of the goals that we set require changes in behavior and developing new and improved habits.

People are often reluctant to create new habits. Are you? One of my goals this year is to create a fit and healthy body. Last year I was committed to doing Pilates, twice a week and happily I achieved that goal! This year, I want to continue my goal to stay on track with my fitness. 3 days a week on the elliptical and some light weight training. Easy? Maybe. Only if I commit to waking up earlier than I usually do 3 days a week. And, if I commit to waking early 3 days a week, then I have to go to sleep earlier. There’s a ripple effect to everything we do!

Let’s dive a little deeper into establishing new habits. It often requires stepping out of our comfort zone, (which I addressed last month) and the uncertainty associated with change can be daunting. The initial effort and discipline needed to form a new habit may seem overwhelming.

Another barrier to establishing new habits is the perceived lack of time. We often feel our schedules are already full, making it challenging to carve out time for new habits. But it’s something we must do, if our goals call for it.

Overcoming these challenges involves addressing mindset, setting realistic expectations, and breaking down habits into smaller, manageable steps. Providing support, accountability, and recognizing the value of long-term gains can support us in developing new habits and embrace positive changes.

When we reflect and refine our habits regularly, we will have ongoing and continuous improvement. These are key elements for a successful and fulfilling year.

Good Luck developing new habits to support your 2024 goals. What new habits are you embracing this year?
